Kag Chode Thupten Samphel Ling monastery is believed to be established by a great lama known as Tenpai Gyaltsen from Tibet in 1429 at the request of local community. The structural design of this monastery building with its internal artifacts preserved in the most original and authentic form is the one and only structure in the area that still stands tall and vibrant. Therefore, this ancient monastery building also serves to exhibit the richness of the traditional art and skill of the area from the past while maintaining the identity of the local art and culture. Today, we are proud to present you this old monastery building as a precious living museum in its best original form for your observance so one can easily imagine how strongly the life here were once integrated with traditional Buddhist culture and practice. In order to continue our efforts in preserving this ancient sacred monastery in the best possible form, an entrance fee of NRS. 200 is charged to our valued visitors. We assured you that the fund collected from your fees would be spent for the most worthy restoration project.
Kag Chode Monastic School
Kag Chode Thupten Samphel Ling Monastery once famed for being an important center for traditional Tibetan Buddhist studies and practice suffered an immense decline from the early 19th century. The decline continued till late 1980s when a handful of young boys from the area got an opportunity to join some of the newly established monasteries and monastic institute in India founded by some of the leading masters of Sakyapa tradition. The deterioration of the monastic community in the area was mainly due to lack of means of sustenance, and also a quality spiritual leader to guide the monastic and local community in their daily life. However, some of the young monks, after graduating from the monasteries and the monastic institute they attended for their spiritual studies In India, joined their hands with the newly appointed spiritual leader Ven. Khen Rinpoche Tenzin Sangpo in 2009, to open a monastic school, under the tutelage guidance and blessing of His Holiness the 41st Sakya Gongma Trichen Rinpoche’ Supreme head of Sakya School of Tibetan Buddhism, for the young village boys of the area as well as neighboring Himalayan region. The school started with just four young local boys at its inception year with minimum basic facility. Thanks to the energetic and hardworking team of some senior monks, led by the present abbot or founder of the school Ven. Khen Rinpoche Tenzin Sangpo, the number of the students enrolled at this monastic school has reached over 100 as a full time boarder. Over the past 15 years, great many development projects were carried out; setting up a Monastic School, construction of a new monastery, couple of hostel blocks and a winter hostel in Pokhara. All the needs of a student such as tuition, fooding, lodging, clothing, pocket money and even medical care are all provided at free of charge while their stay at this monastery. The operation and maintenance of the monastery and the school are solely dependent on the donation by individual or organization. Our fund has been very unpredictable as donations are irregular. We are still seeking for a regular source of fund so, the academic program for the young student monks can be better planned and managed. The traditional Buddhist education and culture are not taught at local government or private schools. This monastic school is the only place where survival of the traditional Buddhist Education, culture and local language can be hoped to continue. In order to preserve our rapidly vanishing ancient Buddhist wisdom and culture, it is our prime aspiration to develop the school into a successful full-fledged and self-sufficient institution. We invite more like minded well-wishers to come forward to join your helping hands with us for this very precious yet, challenging project as the negative impact of the modernity has already made its way into the life of Himalayan people by now. Any contribution towards our school in whatever form and means would be greatly appreciated. The survival of this fragile school is solely dependent on you and we are truly in need of your love and care. Thank you very much for your kind patience going through this leaflet.
